Coho Salmon Fishing
Coho (Silver) salmon arrive on the Kenai in late July and run strong through September, offering some of the most exciting fishing of the season. Known for explosive strikes and aerial acrobatics, silvers are a fly angler's dream and a spin fisherman's thrill ride. Our guides target coho on both the Kenai and Kasilof rivers using proven techniques.
Peak Season: Aug-Sept
Silvers run from late July through September. Peak action hits in August on the Kenai.
Aggressive Biters
Unlike sockeye, silvers aggressively strike spinners, plugs, and flies.
Acrobatic Fighters
Known for their high-flying jumps and aggressive runs when hooked.
From the River
Late Summer & Fall Action
As the massive Sockeye runs fade in August, the Kenai and Kasilof rivers welcome their most aggressive returning species: Coho (Silver) Salmon. Known for explosive strikes, spectacular top-water jumps, and blistering runs, Silvers are the most exciting salmon species to catch on rod and reel.
Techniques We Use
Casting Spinners
Large, brightly colored Vibrax spinners cast into seams, eddies, and frog water near the bank. One of our most productive methods — Silvers will crush spinners with shocking violence.
Twitching Jigs
Marabou or silicone jigs twitched through the strike zone. Silvers often hit the jig on the fall, producing a distinct "thump" on the line. Highly visual and interactive.
Fly Fishing
Silvers are an absolute blast on an 8-weight rod. We swing bright articulated streamers through resting pools. Watching a 12-lb Silver chase a fly in clear water is an unforgettable experience.
Backtrolling Plugs
On days when casting isn't producing, we backtroll plugs wrapped in sardine, or cast bait clusters under a bobber, to provoke finicky fish into reaction strikes.
Silver + Trout Combos
August and September offer a unique opportunity: after securing your limit of Coho, we spend the remainder of the trip targeting massive Rainbow Trout gorging on salmon eggs and flesh behind the spawning fish.
Excellent Table Fare
Fresh Silver Salmon are a very close second to Sockeye for table fare. Bright orange flesh, firm and mild-flavored — excellent grilled, baked, or smoked. They yield thick fillets that freeze exceptionally well.
