The Gear We Use
Tested daily on the Kenai. If it survives our boats, it will survive your trip.
Apparel & Waders
Simms G3 Guide Waders
Guide FavoriteThe industry standard. Breathable, durable, and essential for standing in 40°F glacier water all day. Our guides have worn these for 10+ seasons.
Helly Hansen Impertech Rain Jacket
Highly RecommendedAlaskan guides don't wear Gore-Tex on the boat — we wear rubber. 100% waterproof stretch PU. When it rains (and it will), you'll be glad you have this.
Simms Wading Boots (Vibram Sole)
RequiredFelt soles are banned on the Kenai. Vibram rubber soles with studded outsoles are the legal and most effective option for Kenai River cobble.
Buff / Neck Gaiter
Pack ThisSun protection for your neck and face on those rare cloudless July days. Also keeps the chill off on cold mornings. Essential and lightweight.
Rods & Reels
G.Loomis NRX+ Spinning Rod (9'6" MH)
What We ProvideThe rod we put in every guest's hands for Sockeye and Coho. Medium-heavy power, fast action — perfect for the Kenai Flip technique and fighting hard-running fish.
Sage X Fly Rod (8wt, 9')
Fly FishingOur go-to fast-action fly rod for Rainbow Trout and Silver Salmon. Exceptional lifting power and precise presentation in tight upper river canyons.
Shimano Stradic HG Spinning Reel
Loaded & ReadyLightweight, silky smooth, and built to handle the abuse of daily guided fishing. Paired with 20lb braid as our standard setup for Sockeye and Coho.
Okuma Cedros Offshore Spinning Reel
Salt & KingOur halibut and King Salmon reel. Built for heavy saltwater use, high line capacity, and the drag pressure needed to stop a 60lb halibut at depth.
Tackle & Bait
Blue Fox Classic Vibrax — Size 4 (Pink/Chartreuse)
Coho KillerThe definitive Kenai Silver Salmon spinner. We stock both colors on every boat. Silvers will crush these on aggressive retrieves in fast water.
Yakima Bait Spin-N-Glo (Peach)
Sockeye RigThe standard Sockeye setup. A small peach or pink corky behind a bead and hook — deceptively simple, incredibly effective for the Kenai Flip.
Pautzke Balls O' Fire Salmon Eggs
BaitCured roe is king on the Kenai. We cure our own but always keep Pautzke's as a proven backup. Use under a bobber for drifting bank runs.
Mack's Lure Wedding Ring Spinners
Trout RigOur combo setup for Rainbows during the fall spawn. Small flashy spinners tied above a corky and egg pattern — deadly on the upper Kenai.
