Best Time to Fish the Kenai Peninsula
The Kenai Peninsula offers world-class fishing from May through October. Each month brings a different set of species at peak run strength. Here is your month-by-month guide to planning the perfect Alaska fishing trip.
- Rainbow Trout (early season)
- Chinook Salmon — Kasilof (late May)
Water levels rising with snowmelt. Trout are hungry after winter. Kings begin staging near river mouths.
- King Salmon — Kasilof & Ninilchik
- Rainbow Trout
- Halibut (Homer)
Early King run peaks on the Kasilof. Best month for hatchery Kings. Halibut season in full swing. Note: Kenai River Kings closed 2026.
- Sockeye Salmon (peak!)
- King Salmon (late run, where open)
- Halibut
- Dipnetting (residents)
Absolute peak of the season. Late-run sockeye reach their highest numbers by mid-July. The Kenai is electric. Dipnetting opens July 10.
- Sockeye Salmon
- Silver (Coho) Salmon
- Pink Salmon
- Halibut
- Rainbow Trout
The most diverse fishing month. Silvers start showing by mid-August and overlap with the tail end of the sockeye run. Pink salmon invade in odd years.
- Silver (Coho) Salmon (peak!)
- Rainbow Trout (egg bite begins)
- Dolly Varden
- Steelhead (Anchor River)
Silver salmon peak — arguably the best fighting salmon in Alaska. Rainbow Trout go on a rampage feeding on salmon eggs. Fall colors on the river.
- Rainbow Trout (prime season)
- Dolly Varden
- Silver Salmon (late run)
- Steelhead
Trophy Rainbow Trout season. 20–30+ inch fish are real possibilities. Crowds thin out dramatically. The Kenai in fall is breathtaking.
The Best Month on the Kenai
If you can only choose one month, August offers the most diverse fishing on the entire Kenai Peninsula. You can target late-run Sockeye, fresh Silver Salmon, Pink Salmon (odd years), and watch the Rainbow Trout egg bite begin to build — all in the same week. The weather is typically at its best and daylight hours are still long.
September is a close second — particularly for anglers who want to target trophy Rainbow Trout and the peak Silver Salmon run without the July–August crowds.
