Fishing FAQ

Everything you need to know before you hit the water with us.

Before You Arrive

Do I need to bring my own gear?

No. We provide everything — premium G.Loomis rods, Shimano reels, all terminal tackle, bait, waders, and wading boots. Show up in comfortable clothes ready to fish.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Alaska fishing licenses are required for all anglers 16 and older and are NOT included in your trip. You can purchase one online at ADF&G before your trip or at any local sporting goods store in Soldotna. King Salmon stamps are also required when targeting Kings — we'll walk you through exactly what you need.

What should I wear?

Alaska weather is wildly unpredictable. A sunny 70°F afternoon can flip to a 45°F rain squall in 20 minutes. Layer up: moisture-wicking base layer (no cotton), warm fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof/windproof outer shell. Bring polarized sunglasses — critical for seeing fish — and a hat. We provide waders and boots.

What time do trips start?

Trip times depend on the tide and species. Morning trips typically launch between 5:30–7:00 AM. Afternoon trips depart around 1:00–2:00 PM. We'll confirm your exact departure location and time 24–48 hours before your trip.

On the Water

Are trips family-friendly?

Absolutely. We love introducing the next generation to fishing. For families with kids under 12, we recommend a half-day trip — enough time for incredible memories without fatigue setting in. Our guides are patient, encouraging instructors.

What if it rains?

We fish in the rain. Alaskans do. Unless there is a safety risk (lightning, extreme winds), your trip runs as scheduled. We provide rubber rain gear for guests on the boat. Plan to get wet and you'll never be disappointed.

Can I keep what I catch?

Yes, within ADF&G daily bag limits. Sockeye, Coho, and Pink Salmon can be retained. Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden are strictly catch-and-release to protect the native wild populations. King Salmon retention is subject to annual ADF&G emergency orders — we'll update you on current regulations.

Do I need fishing experience?

Zero experience required. Our guides are expert instructors — within your first hour on the water, they'll have you confidently executing proper technique regardless of your background. Beginners often out-fish experienced anglers by following guide instruction precisely.

After Your Trip

What happens to the fish I catch?

Your guide fillets and bags your catch riverside at no additional charge. We then direct you to a reputable local processor in Soldotna who will vacuum-seal, flash-freeze, and box your fish for the flight home. Most airlines allow checked coolers for frozen fish.

How much does it cost to fly fish home?

Local processing typically runs $0.75–$1.25/lb processed weight. A limit of Sockeye (3–6 fish) costs roughly $40–$80 to process. Shipping is available if you'd rather not fly it home. Ask your guide at the end of your trip for our current recommended processor.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours notice for cancellations. Within 48 hours, deposits are non-refundable unless we cancel due to safety conditions. Acts of nature and ADF&G emergency closures are handled on a case-by-case basis — we will always work with you to reschedule.

How much do I tip my guide?

Guide gratuity is not included in trip rates and is entirely at your discretion. Industry standard is 15–20% of the trip cost for a great experience. Our guides work 12–14 hour days during peak season and tips are a meaningful part of their compensation.
