Sockeye Fury — 87,000 Fish Past Sonar in One Day

The peak of the 2025 late Sockeye run hit the Kenai River like a freight train this week. ADF&G sonar at the Soldotna Bridge counter recorded 87,400 fish in a single day on July 16th — one of the top 10 highest single-day counts in the past decade.

Water clarity was exceptional at 4–5 feet, flows were moderate at 14,200 CFS, and water temps were holding at 58°F — near-perfect conditions for the Kenai Flip technique. Our guides limited out every trip, often by 10:00 AM.

What Was Working

The standard setup dominated this week: pink and peach Spin-N-Glo corky in size 6, tied 8" above a #4 Gamakatsu hook on 12 lb Maxima Ultragreen leader. Side-drifting from the bank near the Soldotna Bridge access points, and from the boat in the Centennial Park to Bing's Landing stretch.

Technique of the Week

Strip the corky tight to the bottom — if you're not ticking the rocks, you're too high. Sockeye hug the substrate during heavy runs. Keep the weight just heavy enough to tick bottom and your hook-up rate will double.

River Conditions

Flow held steady around 14,000–14,500 CFS all week — ideal for both boat and bank fishing. Clarity was the best it had been all season. Water temps in the low 60s are pushing fish to move aggressively, meaning they're spread across the full river width rather than just hugging the near-bank lane.

What's Coming Next

Based on the sonar trajectory, the peak should hold for another 10–14 days before beginning to taper. The second week of August should see Silver Salmon starting to push into the lower river, setting up for outstanding combo opportunities. Book early — August fills fast.

Techniques That Worked This Week

  • Kenai Flip with pink Spin-N-Glo
  • Peach corky below a bead
  • Side-drifting with light lead
