Dolly Varden
Dolly Varden — The Colorful Predator
Often mistaken for trout, Dolly Varden are actually a species of char. In the fall, their bellies turn a brilliant fiery orange with bright pink spots. They are aggressive predators, fighting hard and eagerly taking beads, flesh flies, and streamers.
Like rainbows, Dollies gorge on salmon eggs during the late summer spawn.
They are incredibly abundant in the Upper Kenai and Kenai Lake.
Spawning males exhibit some of the most vibrant colors of any freshwater fish.
Like trout, we strongly practice catch and release for these slow-growing fish.
