The Salmon Lifecycle
The Ultimate Sacrifice — The Life of a Kenai Salmon
Pacific salmon have one of the most incredible lifecycles on earth. They are anadromous: born in freshwater, migrating to the ocean to grow, and returning to the exact stream they were born in to spawn and die. Understanding this process makes you a better angler.
Salmon spend 1-5 years in the ocean, eating heavily and growing massive.
They navigate thousands of miles back to the Kenai using magnetic fields and smell.
Upon entering freshwater, they stop eating, turn red, and males grow hooked jaws (kypes).
Their decaying bodies provide nitrogen and nutrients that power the entire Alaskan ecosystem.
