Dressing for Alaska
The Alaska Layering System
It can be 40°F and raining at 6 AM, and 75°F and sunny by noon. If you dress incorrectly, you will be miserable. The secret to Alaska is layering with synthetic materials. Leave the cotton hoodies and jeans at home.
Merino wool or synthetic thermal tops and bottoms. This wicks moisture away from your skin.
Fleece pullovers, wool sweaters, or lightweight puffy jackets for insulation.
High-quality, truly waterproof (Gore-Tex) rain jacket and rain pants. Windproof is critical.
Wool socks, a warm beanie, and fingerless wool gloves for handling wet gear.
