Spin Fishing the Kenai — The Right Tools for the Job

You don’t need to be a fly angler to fish the Kenai. Spin fishing is incredibly effective for sockeye, silvers, and trout. But standard bass gear won’t survive here. You need gear built for fast water and heavy fish.

Sockeye Setup

Medium-heavy 8-9ft rod, 4000-size reel, 30lb braid with heavy mono leader.

Silver Setup

Medium-action 8ft rod, 3000-size reel, 15lb braid. Casting spinners (Blue Fox #4).

Trout Setup

Medium-light 7ft rod, 2500-size reel, 10lb braid. Float rigs with beads or flesh flies.

The Hooks

Always carry a hone. Hooks must be razor sharp to penetrate tough salmon jaws.
