Middle Kenai River
The Middle Kenai River — Big Water, Bigger Fish
The Middle Kenai, stretching from Skilak Lake down to the Sterling Highway bridge in Soldotna, is characterized by wide, sweeping bends, deep holding pools, and gravel bars. It’s legendary for its massive rainbow trout and serves as a major highway for all salmon species.
Motors are allowed, making it easier to re-drift productive runs.
The gravel beds here are prime spawning grounds, attracting huge trout.
Excellent holding water for coho salmon in August and September.
Often less crowded than the extreme upper or lower sections.
